Depression—What Is It?

Lately have you been experiencing any of the following?

  1. You go to bed only to lie awake with your mind bringing up thing after thing after thing? OR you wake up at 3am unable to get back to sleep?
  2. Sadness or apathy pulls the plug on your energy, so you’re unable to enjoy the people and activities you used to?
  3. You’re just going through the motions and wonder, “Why do I even bother?”
  4. You skip meals and snacks because you don’t feeling like eating
OR you could (and sometimes do) eat everything in and out of sight?

If you’re saying, “Yeah, that’s me” to some or all of the questions, you might be carrying a burden of depression. And you aren’t alone.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health nearly 10% of the adult American population suffers from some form of depression in any given year.

You’re not the only one who feels sad or worried at times. It’s normal.

It’s normal and expected for you to feel grief at the loss of a loved one, or a job, or a precious possession, even if your emotions don’t show up until the shock of your loss begins to subside.

But what’s NOT normal and expected is when feelings of grief, sadness, hopelessness or despair seem to come at you from nowhere, appearing even when you aren’t aware of losses.

When you’re grieving, it’s natural for you to feel sad for a long time, especially when what you lost was very important to you.

But what’s NOT perfectly natural is when long after the event or condition that triggered them occurred, those feelings of grief and sadness stay consistently at the same level of intensity.

When you’re feeling the weight of your emotions so heavily that it

  • interferes with sleep
  • prevents you from performing daily activities
  • or arouses concern in the people who care about you

you need support from an experienced healthcare provider trained to help you find relief from depression.

Nancy Brockett, PhD teaches you how to

  • recognize and respect what you are experiencing
  • treat yourself with compassion
  • release your energy that’s trapped in depression
  • transform negatively-charged thinking
